the history

1970, Sorrento was a small beachside town, with She-Oak and Moonyah trees provided shelter from the blistering Australian sun. 1970, ‘The Oak’s Estate was a place of summer frivolity, of creativity, art and culture. Prior to 1970, The Oaks was home to The Leggett’s, of Leggett’s Ballroom. Leggett’s Ballroom was an era of dancing, the birth of dance competitions in Australia, the birthplace of Graham Kennedy’s illustrious career. The Oaks was also a place of swimming practice, Harold Holt stepping out in the bay while enjoying the Leggett’ hospitality. Leggett’s Ballroom was a venue where Melbourne icons danced the night away, the bohemian spirit infusing the area. Whiting and crayfish were catches of the day, fishing off the beach known as Oaks Point. The Continental was in its infancy and petrol bowsers were yet to be introduced.

Kona Kahlua came to be in the 70s,  a nod to the holiday island of Hawaii, mid-century design imbued throughout the property. Kona Kahlua has been revitalized with a nostalgic nod to the history and times of the area. Drawing inspiration from the area, working with local makers and creators, Kona Kahlua allows guests to experience mid-century modern at its best, all the while enjoying the best of local design.
